There's nothing quite like a beach day for a dog. Wide-open sand to stretch their legs, new smells on the wind, and the kind of happy tiredness a park walk rarely delivers. It's exactly why we added beach & shoreline walks to what we offer — and we're lucky, because some of the North West's best dog beaches are a short hop from the city. Here are the ones our pack loves.
Home to Antony Gormley's famous Another Place iron men, Crosby is a huge, flat expanse of sand that's brilliant for a proper run. It's popular and easy to reach, with a promenade for the walk there and back. Do keep an eye on the tide and stick to the firmer sand — the flats can get soft further out.
Our favourite for an adventure. National Trust pinewoods, towering dunes and a broad beach, plus the chance of spotting the famous red squirrels among the trees. It's a magical spot — just keep your dog on the paths through the reserve to protect the wildlife, and arrive early on sunny days as the car parks fill fast. A perfect outing for our longer adventure walks.
Miles of open beach backed by nature-reserve dunes, with plenty of room to spread out. Lovely and gentle underfoot — a good choice for calmer, steadier walks. Note that some resort beaches have seasonal dog restrictions on marked bathing zones between May and September, so check the signs when you arrive and you'll always find a dog-friendly stretch.
Across the water, Thurstaston and the Wirral Country Park give you big Dee-estuary skies and a mix of clifftop path and shoreline. Beautiful and usually quiet — but the estuary mud can be deep and the tide comes in quickly, so we keep to the marked paths and firm ground and always walk with the tide times in mind.
A tidy seaside walk with the marine lake on one side and the Dee on the other, and a promenade that's ideal for senior dogs who like a flat, easy stroll — the sort of gentle outing we build into our senior dog care.
Beaches are wonderful, but they ask for a bit of respect. We always: check the tide times before we set off, rinse salt and sand off afterwards, carry fresh water so no one's tempted to drink seawater, and watch for seasonal restrictions and ground-nesting birds in the dunes. Get those right and it's the best day out a dog can have.
